Public & Private
WEEK 1
Writing Exercise
Picture 1.
I see many many bricks on the wall. I don't know perfect word for it but seems like stove? fireplace. It looks like it might gonna fall apart or collapse any soon. This place could have built by someone who is not professional or who is too stylish. This interior design makes me kind of dizzy, but makes me feel like nostalgic and cozy in some way.
Picture 2.
Judging from the poor picture quality, black-and-white photographs, and vaguely visible attire, it may be from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. When I saw this image, the first thought came to my mind was whether it was fake or not. The large two-story house was placed on wooden structures that resembled the construction site. I've never seen such a case. Is it a case of moving a whole house? Or is the construction going on to expand the two-story house into a four-story house? It feels very bizarre in terms of unrealistic structure and black and white.
Picture 3.
It seems to be a place where politics and current affairs are discussed. The flag looks like the United States. It's a very hectic and chaotic. People are doing different things, and cameras are facing different places. Some people didn't seem interested in what was happening at all. It occurred to me that perhaps nothing was happening at the moment.
I had to move in to new place this day, so I missed most of the class, but I did some excises based on what I heard from my classmates.

Sketch I made while talking to Mirte.

I used one of the suggested methods during class to experiment. I made sound from tools I had to replace sound of 5 second short video.

Used my finger tapping wooden table to create footstep sound. And used old rusted roller to create skateboard moving sound.

WEEK 2 & WEEK 3
About Mirte & plan for maquette.

Since her most interest is in music festival, I decided to use video and sound. Used After Effects to make a room. She liked festival and craft beer a lot. But did not have clear preferable hobby. She also had a lot of posters and plants around her room, but she said most of them do not have meanings, mostly for decoration.

In this sense, I wanted to make room that shows contrast between what physically is forming her room and her interests. Which means that even most of the elements that make up her room are plants and posters, but I wanted to show that the major elements that make up her room can never speak for her.
Mirte's room worked with After Effects because I thought it needed sound and video elements. I also focused on using her favorite purple light. The posters and plants in the video have silhouettes but no content. It wanted to express that her room has a strong meaning of decoration, such as posters and plants, and that objects that do not mean much to her cannot define her.
WEEK 4
While talking to the group members, we found out that what we felt in common was interpersonal pressure, and we brainstormed something related to pressure. Related or thoughtful images were gathered on the mood board to find a better idea.
Following Pressure, the word escapism came to us, and we started working around these two keywords. Escapism, usually in the dictionary, is used negatively in the sense of escape from reality. However, we thought that the meaning of Escapism can be used as a positive meaning from reinterpretation of space. We wanted to talk about the pressure that many people have in modern society, and among the kinds of pressures, peer pressure. We wanted to make virtual space for people to escape from peer pressure. The imaginary space we designed has only one physical space, which consists of mirrors surrounding the center and a floor. When a visitor to this space stands in the center of this space, he or she faces several mirrors surrounded in the direction of the person. In this way, we could represent peer pressure using characteristics of mirrors and of this space. I designed a space in the form of mirrors surrounding the person who visited the space because I think that the person's peer pressure feeling through the others is made by himself. Many of my images in the mirror are looking at me, and I feel that this situational depiction is the visual image of peer pressure.
Final documentation of the space.
Prototype of mirror room.
Process of setting up for projector and recording.
Photo shots while recording.
These are videos of 5 senses.

From top left video, they are hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste.

These videos will be placed around room of mirrors.
